Grandparents Day at Aditya Birla World Academy (ABWA)

The Junior School students at Aditya Birla World Academy organized a Grandparents Day event on 15th and 16th September, 2011 to express their love and appreciation for their grandparents and to honour them in a special way.

Students from Lower Kindergarten to grade 5 participated in the programme which was very well attended by the students' maternal and paternal grandparents as well as great grandparents. They were welcomed by ABWA students and staff with a warm smile, a 'tilak' and a lollipop (to signify the return of their childhood with the birth of their grandchildren).

The children sang songs, recited poems and performed dances in the school auditorium in a display of their affection for their grandparents. The Lower Kindergarten students dressed up as their favourite family member and spoke to the audience about why that person was their favourite. The Higher Kindergarten students dressed in red and denim and performed on a rock song after weeks of practice with their class teachers. The grade 2 students performed a fusion number- some danced on a Nepali folk song interspersed with a rock and roll performance by their classmates. Grade 3 presented a Navratri dance. The grade 5 students put together a presentation which included family photos and spoke about their most cherished memories with their grandparents.

This was followed by activities and games for grandparents in the classrooms. In the week before the event, students prepared handmade mementoes to present to their grandparents.

The school library had a special display of books on grandparents. Students and their grandparents were encouraged to visit the school library and read a book together or just browse through the library.

The day ended with refreshments and drinks for all grandparents and students in the school cafeteria.

The special bond that grandparents share with their grandchildren was most tangible. The smiles on the faces of the students and their grandparents and the applause after each grade's performance were the rewards at the end of the day!
